Our dear friends Archie Louis and Steve Turner are driving forces behind the important charity KidSport. I will be participating in the 8K charity run in Victoria October 9th leaving the Marathon and Half-Marathon to more hardy knees and hips.

I would be grateful if you could contribute something to spur me on and help kids who can’t, because of financial reasons, play sports.

Victoria Times Colonist

There has been much talk, some of it heated, about the 86-year-old Johnson Street Bridge.

This project is vital to the long-term health of Victoria.

Jeff Rubin writes in this morning’s Globe and Mail on the subject of Canada as a water superpower.  His comments touch on the mechanics by which water and oil are closely linked in the Canadian economy, and especially in the Alberta oil sands.  Massive amounts of fresh water are used in the form of steam to separate synthetic crude from raw bitumen.

A great report on Canadian small business.

Thanks to David of Victoria for sending this in.

Much of the reporting in the West related to Afghan women depicts voiceless victims subjected to relentless discrimination or implies that human rights are alien to Afghan culture, and therefore not something for which there is any homegrown demand.

This is an absolute falsehood which I have addressed elsewhere, see http://www.butterfliesandwheels.org/2010/womens-rights-are-called-cultural-imperialism.

From my article today in Butterflies & Wheels, responding to the op-ed by Aruna Papp, author of the recently released “Culturally-driven violence against women: A growing problem in Canada’s immigrant communities” and to the 2007 honour killing of Aqsa Parvez in Mississauga, Ontario.

I have had a great week in Toronto meeting a number of friends who have been following the progression of our thinking in the research of Canada's Excellent Future.

The important takeaways of the advice I have received echoes similar advice from the people in Victoria that I meet regularly and from others on-line, and that is, first, not to get too caught up in the weeds of public policy, second, reduce the number of 'steps', and third, try for a sweeping conversation leaving the details to later, and potentially, even to others.

One simple step to an excellent Canadian future is to provide sufficient income to every Canadian in order to eliminate poverty if only because of the high cost of persistent worst in class education, health, community and economic outcomes that poverty breeds. Building on the ideas of a negative income tax, guaranteed annual income, guaranteed adequate income, and earned income tax credits we consider the Canadian Citizenship Wage.
